Breaking Down the James Franco Abortion Interview: Did Elizabeth Harman Say What You Think She Said?
A video which has been making waves on the internet recently has been widely misunderstood. In the video, James Franco and Eliot Michaelson interview Princeton Philosopher Elizabeth Harman about abortion, but the conclusions people have drawn about her arguments aren’t quite right. Just as we should not endorse incrementalism when it is saying that an anti-abortion position is right for the wrong reasons, we should not endorse arguments saying that a pro-abortion position is wrong for the wrong reasons. Many people have understood Harman to be arguing that abortion is justified when the mother chooses to abort if the child… Read More »
Sometimes people object to saying that a particular pro-life law is giving approval to abortion. For example, someone might object to me saying that a partial-birth abortion ban is implicitly giving approval to all other forms of abortion. Now, to be charitable, it may be that not all lawmakers have thought it through and may not realize that they are doing this. Likewise, someone who objects to our interpretation of the particular bill or law may simply not understand the thinking. I hope to help fix that. Let’s say there is a legislator named James. James hates abortion. He wants… Read More »
Before I get to the main substance of Greg’s letter I’d like to say that I don’t think it is helpful or necessary to refer to Democrats as DemonRATS. It is childish rhetoric that doesn’t serve a purpose. Perhaps one of the biggest problems with Greg’s letter is the assumption that asking about the criminalizing of abortion is an abstract hypothetical “gotcha” question. Abortion will be abolished. Asking questions about what that looks like and what that means are legitimate. Secondary to this problem is the idea that you should not answer hypothetical questions. While hypothetical questions can be framed poorly… Read More »
WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch faced questions from the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning Roe v. Wade and legal precedent. Gorsuch is reported to be a pro-life judge. In January, lifesitenews.com reported that “Gorsuch, 49, is a favorite of social conservatives because of his pro-life views and his record defending religious liberty.” However, Gorsuch has consistently answered the Committee showing strong support for legal precedent and affirming that Roe is a part of that precedent, showing no interest in overturning Roe. Sen. Chuck Grassley asked Gorsuch about precedent and past cases, in response to which Gorsuch said, “It is a precedent of… Read More »
Cree Erwin-Sheppard died at the age of 24 in July of 2016, days after killing her child on June 30, 2016 at a Planned Parenthood in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Operation Rescue responded to Cree’s death and investigated. Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue, responded in such a way that illuminates the ageism common to the leaders in the pro-life movement. Operation Rescue was informed by Michigan Right to Life that the likely abortionist on duty at the Planned Parenthood was Mandy Gittler. Gittler was involved in the death of another born human while she worked killing preborn humans at a Planned Parenthood in… Read More »
